Every number has a date

“Latest published” means the newest available observation in this saved release. A 2024 value remains a 2024 value, even if it was retrieved today. Comparing the same year gives a more consistent picture; some countries may not have data for that year.

Missing is different from zero

We preserve missing observations. Charts leave gaps, rankings show unavailable values, and maps use a separate no-data colour. The published world value is the provider’s aggregate, not a sum of countries or an average of percentages.

One release, one perspective

This local edition uses release wdi-2026-09-13-8eced9de6229. Published map values, tables and charts draw from that same release. The globe uses present-day boundaries, including when displaying historical observations.

A beautiful Earth, with context

Live day & night calculates the Sun’s current position from UTC every second using the U.S. Naval Observatory’s solar equations. The boundary keeps moving while rotation is paused and stays tied to geography when you drag. Day illuminates the whole globe; Night shows historical city lights. These are illustrative viewing options. Sunlight in Live mode uses your device’s clock; it is a calculation, not a live satellite feed.

Clouds and city lights are illustrative imagery. They do not represent live weather, live human activity or the locations of disease cases. Coloured country layers show national statistics.

Published figures and moving estimates

The site checks the free World Bank API daily while it is running. A complete new release is saved before it becomes current. Existing shared views keep their release; use Load updated figures to switch. If a check fails, the last complete data remains available.

Population counters are separate modelled estimates. They interpolate between annual population projections, using July 1 at 00:00 UTC as a consistent display convention. Today and this year are net changes since the start of each UTC period, including migration for countries. They are not a feed of registered births or deaths. Population is not extrapolated outside its supplied projection years. While projections load or if adjacent years are missing, the globe shows the published population and its reference year when available. The detailed population counters remain unavailable without usable projections.

“Estimated GDP this year” spreads the latest published annual GDP evenly across the current UTC calendar year: annual GDP multiplied by the fraction of the year elapsed since January 1. It resets each January 1 and uses the actual year length, including leap days. The published annual amount and its reference year remain visible.

This GDP estimate illustrates output accumulating at the published annual pace. It does not measure activity in real time or model growth, seasonality, inflation or exchange-rate changes. It retains the annual baseline’s US-dollar units. Population and GDP counters recalculate four times a second while the page is visible; displayed whole numbers change only when their calculated values reach the next rounding threshold. Published GDP, percentages, health figures, map colours, rankings, charts and exports keep their reference years.
